It was march 10th, 1900 in Valla, San Giovanni, Italy, Anthony Clemente was born and later came to America at the age of six. Thirteen years, later at the age of nineteen Anthony started Clemente Inc. He started a hauling business in Carney’s Point with a single wagon and horse. He created such a high demand for his services that soon he was using fifteen teams.
In 1925, in order to further expand the business with contracting, he acquired motorized equipment in place of the horse drawn vehicles. Anthony, was then able to carry out large contracts for road building which became the major feature of his business. Then in 1928, his three brothers joined him in running the company; John, Philip and Joseph. Fifteen years later in 1944 Clemente Inc. was able to grow at a rapid pace employing 75 people, used 34 trucks, had 5 power shovels, cranes, 2 bulldozers, 3 road scrapers, 2 cement mixers, road rollers and much more smaller equipment. Towards the end of the 1900s Clemente Inc. was recognized as one of the biggest construction companies in New Jersey.
